As a partner to over 10,500 independent hotels worldwide for distribution and marketing strategies, D-EDGE closely monitors hotel distribution and advertising trends.

We have observed that direct booking trends were increasing: the direct revenue share increased from 23.6% in 2019 to 29.5% in 2023, a growth of 24% over the same period.

So we conducted further research to find where this increase was coming from. We discovered that digital advertising campaigns played a significant role. Consequently, we aimed to quantify their impact and associated costs precisely. Additionally, we explored the influence of artificial intelligence in the industry, testing various scenarios.

This paper shares our findings and insights, offering valuable conclusions for hoteliers.

In the past 15 months, the hotel industry has suffered one of the most significant losses in gross booking quantity ever. However, despite volumes in 2020 being 69% lower than the previous year, we have been monitoring the reservation types, channels and rates to gain insights into trends that could help hotels plan the recovery.

In 2019 we published our first analysis of distribution trends, titled A Deep-dive into European Hotel Distribution trends 2014-2018, in which we uncovered the sheer volume of cancellation rates from OTAs and how this was affecting hotels. The report laid out a lot more on how the industry, at its peak during the study, was changing.

Our second analysis in 2020 was broadened to look into the trends not only in EMEA but also in Asia-Pacific (APAC). The report, called The Rise of Direct Bookings Over OTAs, brought to light how patterns had changed due to the pandemic, and how direct bookings were taking a much bigger part of a much smaller market.

This study is the follow-up to our 2020 partial analysis. In this report, we examined the year 2020 in its entirety (to better understand the impact of the pandemic), and reviewed the first five months of 2021. The information included in this research has been gathered from 3,442 hotels in Europe and 438 hotels in the Asia-Pacific region.

Following our very widely circulated study on the distribution landscape of Europe, up to 2018, we wanted to update the study and include the Asia-Pacific* region to compare and see if the trends are global or regional.

We have gathered information from over 3,400 hotels in Europe and 450 hotels in the Asia-Pacific region* to understand how the hotel distribution landscape is evolving. The study focuses on the last three complete years (2017 to 2019) and considering the sea change that our industry has suffered – it includes 2020 broken into three sections (see methodology section for more details).

Following our 2017 report on the state of metasearch, we have updated it to show the data and the progress since then. We created this new study to help hotels plan and allocate their marketing budgets in the coming weeks and months, by investing in the channels with the highest return on ad spend. In the original report, we highlighted the characteristics of each meta platform and its evolution over time. In the span of just three years, the advertising landscape has changed dramatically in our industry; Display advertising has become the second-highest performing advertising channel for hotels. When we began working on the follow-up to “The State of Metasearch”, we decided to analyse not only the canonical metasearch platforms, but to include all those advertising channels that, directly or indirectly, contribute to hotels’ direct revenue.

The hotel distribution landscape is often touted as a duopoly held by Booking and Expedia, but we see it slightly differently. While they do command a sizeable part of the market share, there are actually other channels that hoteliers are leveraging successfully.
After hundreds of hours analyzing the last five years of hotel distribution across a selection of our client base, we have produced a report to shed some light on how distribution has evolved and, hopefully, give some inspiration to hoteliers to optimizing it.
